| StressTechniques from Barbara Stevens Helping you to create the life you want: Healthy, Confident, Abundant |

Try this technique to help you feel the difference between tension and relaxation: HERE’S HOW YOU DO IT: This is a great exercise that will allow you to become aware of what muscles are tense and how they feel after you have relaxed them. Make a fist with your right hand. Hold it for the count of 5, feel the tension all the way up your arm. Take a deep breath and as you slowly exhale, say to yourself “RELAX”, and slowly release the fist. Note the difference in the two feelings and, that your mind has control over the muscles! Now, do the same thing with your left hand. Make the fist tight, so you can feel it in the upper and lower arm. Take a deep breath, and as you slowly exhale, say to yourself “RELAX”, and slowly release the fist and arm muscles. Let the fingers uncurl, FEEL what it feels like to consciously relax your muscles. Tense the muscles from your toes, curl your toes, squeeze your knees together, feel the tension in your calves and thighs. Same as before-deep breath-slowly exhale, say to yourself “RELAX”, and slowly release ALL those muscles Next bring your shoulders to your ears. (This what many of us look like when we come out of work!) Deep breath-slowly exhale, say to yourself “RELAX”, and slowly release ALL those muscles. Finally, tense your jaw and eye muscles, deep breath, exhale, “RELAX”, and slowly release. Tense each muscle group, and then relax it with a thought and outward breath. Note the different feeling between tense and relaxed. You are connecting your exhalation to the word and feeling “RELAX”. If you practice this on a daily basis, after a very short time, you can relax with just a deep breath and the thought “RELAX”. You can create a feeling of peace and empowerment any time you need it. All you have to commit to is 3 minutes, 3 times a day. That’s right, you can begin with 3 minutes, 3 times a day. How easy is that?!
